FolderSizes v2.2 beta

Pssst, hey you. Interested in having a quick peek at the new BulletProof FolderSizes version 2.2 release?

Here’s the beta build download link:

http://foldersizes.m6.net/beta/bpfs.exe

Release notes:

- New feature: Introduced a new graph-oriented file report for displaying distribution of file attributes. Provided usual array of menu and keyboard accessors.

- Improvement: Added new command-line switch called “attribs” for accessing the new “file attributes” file report. Example: foldersizes.exe /path:”d:\temp” /filereport:”attribs”

- Improvement: Shell context menu extension was updated to provide access to “file attributes” report.

- Improvement: The pie graph view now reveals the amount of space consumed by files in the scanned folder. This is displayed as an additional pie slice labeled “[files]“, followed by a percentage value.

- Improvement: Added the ability to right-click on the drive space pie graph and copy it to the Windows clipboard. By request.

- Improvement: Reduced the size of the FolderSizes download package by over half a meg.

- Bug fix: Resolved a problem the main pie graph showing incorrect slice ratios under specific conditions.

- Other minor improvements, documentation updates, and bug fixes.

If you find any problems or have any questions/comments, just shoot me an email. And thanks!

Localization

Hey are there any BulletProof FolderSizes users out there that would like to cooperate with me to create a non-English translation of the user interface (and possibly the documentation)? I’d gladly offer up a free registration key or two if you’d like to lend me a hand. I’ve been doing some work to get BulletProof FolderSizes ready for the translation process. So if you’re interested, please do let me know.

CPU Magazine

Hey, I don’t know if you’re a reader of CPU (Computer Power User) magazine, but if you are… you just might notice that BulletProof FolderSizes received a great review in the pages of the most recent issue. I just got my subscription copy a few days ago, so it should be hitting news stands shortly.

I have to admit to being fairly gratified by seeing a nice review of my software in the pages of a great magazine like CPU. It’s like seeing your kid do a good job in the school play. ;-)

Also thanks to the FolderSizes users that have emailed me recently with their kind and gracious comments. I love hearing how you’re using FolderSizes – so please don’t ever hesitate to let me know!

Now for version 2.1!

Just getting version 2.0 downloaded and installed?

Well good, ’cause I’ve got version 2.1 ready now! ;-)

This new minor update focuses primarily on graphing capability. It provides you with a choice between the existing bar chart view (in the lower right of the screen) or a new 3D pie chart. You can switch between these graph views at will using the graph view toolbar. The File Types Graph (see photo below in previous blog entry) has also been added, along with a few other minor improvements. And, of course, a couple miscellaneous bug fixes sprinkled in for your bemusement.

The v2.1 “gold master” code is in the hands of my publishing company, which should be rolling it out any day now.

What, you want yours in advance? Ok, fine, have at it:

Existing version 2.0 registration details will work in v2.1. Enjoy! And, as always, drop me a line to let me know what you think.

If you didn’t receive your free upgrade key for some reason, let me know and we’ll remedy the matter.

Thanks!

New file report graphing

Hi again, just wanted to toss you a sneak peak at one of the new graphs coming in BulletProof FolderSizes 2.x. The quality of this image isn’t spectacular (it’s fairly compressed), but you’ll get the idea.

There’s nothing quite like a pie graph to help you to visualize disk space usage by file type – this allows you to quickly determine that certain types of files (multimedia files, for example) are consuming a big chunk of space. There’s also a display filter that lets you show only the X largest file types (by disk space consumed).

Anyway, more to come!

Graph Feedback Sought

Recently I’ve been working to extend the graph/charting support provided by BulletProof FolderSizes. As a result, I’d be keen to hear any feedback you might have regarding what types of graphs/charts you would like to see added. If you have any thoughts along these lines, please email me at mark@keymetricsoft.com.

Thanks very much!
