Duplicate files are one of the most common sources of wasted storage. FolderSizes includes a fast, effective Duplicate Files report that identifies duplicates across local drives and network shares, groups them for easy review, and lets you take action directly from the results.
Flexible Comparison Options
FolderSizes identifies duplicates by comparing files using the criteria you choose:
- Name and size (default) — Matches files with the same name and identical file size
- Name only — Finds files with the same name regardless of size
- Name, size, and date — Adds modification timestamp for more precise matching
Additional options let you ignore special characters or numeric characters in file names during comparison, which is useful when files have been renamed with suffixes like "(1)" or "(copy)".
Multi-Drive and Network Scanning
Unlike basic duplicate finders that work on a single folder, FolderSizes can scan multiple local and network file systems simultaneously using multi-threaded scanning. This means duplicates spread across different drives, servers, or network shares are found in a single operation.
Use scan filtering to focus the duplicate search on specific file types, size ranges, or folder paths — for example, find only duplicate documents over 1 MB, or ignore system directories entirely.
Review and Manage Results
Duplicate files are organized into groups, making it easy to see all copies of each file and decide which to keep. Built-in tools help you work through results efficiently:
- Selection Assist — Quickly select which copies to keep and which to remove across all groups
- Sort and filter — Organize results by size, path, date, or owner to prioritize cleanup
- Direct file operations — Delete, move, copy, or archive duplicates directly from the report
- Recycle Bin support — Deleted files go to the Recycle Bin for safe recovery if needed
Export and Automate
The duplicate file report can be exported to HTML, Excel, PDF, CSV, or XML for documentation, auditing, or sharing with your team. Use the task scheduler to run duplicate scans on a recurring basis and have results emailed automatically.
